Spring Planting Season is Here — What’s Growing at Farmsustaina

Spring is here, and so is one of the most exciting times of year on the farm. The soil is warming, the days are stretching longer, and right now at Farmsustaina we’re laying the groundwork for our most abundant growing season yet.

What we’re planting this spring

Our spring lineup includes Swiss chard, green beans, cucumbers, summer squash, and cherry tomatoes. For our CSA subscribers, expect these additions in your boxes soon. We’re also trialing a lemon cucumber and a heirloom Brandywine tomato this year — so there may be fun surprises ahead!

Soil first — always

Everything we do at Farmsustaina starts with soil health. Before any seeds go in, we amend our beds with organic compost, check pH, and ensure the microbial life underground is thriving. Healthy soil means healthy plants — and healthy plants mean more nutritious food on your table. We never use synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. Want to try these principles at home? See our Zone 8a organic growing guide.

The Power of Local Organic Farms – Know Where Your Food Comes From

In today’s globalized food system, it’s become harder than ever to trace the journey of our meals. That strawberry in your supermarket may have traveled over 1,000 miles, treated with preservatives to keep it looking fresh. The spinach in your salad could have passed through multiple warehouses before hitting the shelf, losing nutrients along the way. This disconnect leaves many of us wondering: do I really know where my food comes from—and how it was grown?

The problem with industrialized food

Mass-produced food often prioritizes shelf life and profit over nutrition and transparency. Long supply chains mean unknown farming practices, reduced freshness, and significant environmental costs from long-distance shipping.

The local organic difference

Small farms like Farmsustaina, right here in Cary, NC, offer a better way. As a family-run urban farm, we’re dedicated to growing safe, healthy food with no synthetic pesticides or GMOs, using sustainable practices that nurture the soil and conserve water, with full transparency — visit our farm and see exactly how your food is grown.

Farming is a Calling!

Farming is a calling, a relentless, all-consuming labor of love. It demands every ounce of your strength, your patience, and your hope. Yet despite the backbreaking work, the unpredictable storms, and the heartache of a bad season, it’s a life I cherish with every fiber of my being. There is magic in planting a seed, nurturing it with your own hands, and watching it grow into nourishment that feeds not just my family, but my community. Even when the earth feels unforgiving, farmers rise again, stubbornly hopeful, season after season.

I’m asking you to join us, not just as consumers, but as allies. Because farms don’t survive by chance. They survive because people choose to stand with them. Every meal, every purchase, every dollar you spend is a vote for the future you believe in.

Here’s how you can fight for the farms that feed us

• Cook with purpose — let fresh, local ingredients inspire your table.
• Join a CSA box and invest directly in the farmers who grow your food.
• Visit our farm stand and meet the people whose hands feed you.
• Check our Facebook page for current farm stand hours and what’s in season.

Once farmland is paved over, it’s gone forever. But if we stand together, if we choose local, eat local, and champion the hands that feed us, we can ensure that generations to come will know the taste of truly fresh picked produce, and the pride of a harvest earned.
