Farm Update: Mid-April — What’s Growing and What’s at the Stand

Lush green bean plants in full production at Farmsustaina organic farm Cary NC

Mid-April at Farmsustaina and the farm is moving fast. Here’s a quick look at what’s happening right now.

At the stand this weekend: Swiss chard and kale still going strong. Green beans coming in. Fresh Marketmore cucumbers and garlic. Cilantro in good supply. Spring greens are wrapping up — grab them while they last before the heat pushes them out.

Something special this week: We’re also bringing traditional Kenyan heritage greens to the stand — Kunde (cowpea leaves), Managu (African Nightshade), Kahurura (pumpkin leaves), and Saget (Spider Plant). These are deeply nutritious indigenous vegetables grown and eaten in Kenya for generations. Ask us how to cook them — we’ll walk you through it.

In the ground: Sweet potato slips just went in this week. White corn (maize) planted in two blocks. Peppers and tomatoes are settling in nicely. Strawberries are flowering. Watermelons are next once soil temperatures hit 70°F consistently.

This week’s tip: If you’re growing tomatoes at home, now is the time to set up your supports while the plants are still small. Cages, stakes, or string — whichever you use, do it now before roots get established and you risk disturbing them later.

Check our Facebook page for this weekend’s stand hours and what we’ll have available. See you at Good Hope Farm!
