May at Farmsustaina and the farm is in full summer mode. The crops planted in March and April are establishing well. Here’s the latest.
At the stand this weekend: Kale, fresh and available at Good Hope Farm. Check our Facebook page for this weekend’s hours.
Coming to the stand from late May: Kunde (cowpea leaves) — first harvest due mid-to-late May from the March 29 planting. Managu, Saget, and Kahurura — late May to early June. Strawberries from overwintered ROCCO stock — May to June.
Coming in June and beyond: Marketmore cucumbers (planted April 12) — mid-June. Sungura white maize (planted March 29) — late June. Garlic (overwintered) — June. Dhania/cilantro (planted April 26) — mid-June. Beets, okra, Swiss chard, spring onion — late June. Sungura white maize — late June to early July. Watermelon, peppers, cherry and beefsteak tomatoes, Faida maize — mid to late July. Cabbage and cauliflower — late July to August.
This week’s tip: Kale is one of the most productive greens you can grow in NC. Harvest outer leaves regularly and the plant keeps producing all season. Don’t take more than a third of the plant at once and it will reward you for months.
