Late April at Farmsustaina and the farm looks completely different from two weeks ago. Here’s what’s happening this week.
At the stand this weekend: Marketmore cucumbers coming in well. Green beans in good supply. Kale and Swiss chard still producing. Garlic. Cilantro. Strawberries making an appearance. Last of the spring greens before summer heat takes over.
Heritage greens at the stand: Our traditional Kenyan greens are available this weekend — Managu (African Nightshade), Saget (Spider Plant), Kunde (cowpea leaves), and Kahurura (pumpkin leaves). Managu is rich in iron, calcium, and vitamins A, B, and C — typically sautéed with onions and finished with cream or peanut butter to round out the slight bitterness. Saget is fast-growing, high in vitamins A and C and protein, and excellent simply sautéed with cream. Come try something new.
In the ground: White corn (maize) is up and showing good early growth. Sweet potato vines are spreading. Tomatoes starting to flower. Beets are in and germinating. Watermelons going in soon.
This week’s tip: Keep harvesting cilantro from the outer leaves regularly to delay bolting. Once it flowers and sets seed the leaf flavour fades fast — cut it early and often to keep fresh foliage coming.
